13.25m2 / 140 sq ft antique French triple border ceramic floor c.1915 (CE163)

13.25m2 / 140 sq ft+ ceramic encaustic floor manufactured by Societe Anonyme, Gare de Douzies, Maubeuge c.1915. Reclaimed from a house in Bachant, a town with a population of c.2,400 inhabitants in the Nord Pas de Calais department of France, this French triple border floor is in a pallete of aubergine, mid grey, green and cream on an off-white base. The stylized vegetal four tile motif is both detailed and ornate although its design is classically period French and easy on the eye. The floor arrives with its original triple border series, comprising of a 15.2cm sq same size border tile on an aubergine base and a double lay of a half size 3D helix again borrowing from the same colour palette. This is a floor of appealing harmony with a stong symetrical border complimenting a more fluid and detailed field tile.

The floor has cleaned well, having had its old mortar removed from the back, joints from the tile sides cleaned off and the faces restored with a specialist alkaline to reveal a good ceramic. The patina is aged and rich with some tiles displaying edge nibbling and small groutable chips. Owing to the handmade batch method of production there is some variation in the colours, most notably on the small border tiles, with some tiles showing detail in teal and others green. We have taken a photograph of the small borders with its complimentary central border so this can be seen. 

The floor arrives ready to relay and the high resolution photographs below of around a metre square of the floor are an accurate representation of the whole. All the border tile corner pieces are present, four for the large border and eight for the half size border. Being ceramic encaustic the floor was highly fired, meaning it can be laid both inside and outside of the home as very high and sub zero temperatures will have no effect on the tiles structure. They are also excellent conductors and retainers of heat and can be used with underfloor heating systems.
