18.5m2+ antique ceramic encaustic floor tiles with original borders c.1906

A complete antique ceramic floor with its original full size and half size border tiles. The floor was manufactured by Maufroid Freres et Soeur in 1906.

The floor tiles are 16cm sq (6 1/4 inches) and tessellate in a classically geometric design of an anchored mid-blue and white jewel motif framed by charcoal and white piping on a mid grey tile background. The same size borders are more ornate in a linked chain design and again offering mid blue, black and greys. The smaller half size border borrows from a classical Roman geometric design in mustard, charcoal and white.

The floor totals 18.5m2+ / 137 sq ft and there are a large quantity of tiles with small capillary cracks* that are supplied free for offcuts. The full contingent of 4 large border corner tiles and 4 small border corner tiles are present.

* a capillary crack is formed at the point of firing when a tile leaving the kiln and in the process of cooling is exposed to humidity, resulting in a small surface crack on the tile from the edge inwards
