A small antique Belgian ceramic encaustic floor - early 20th century (CE160)
SOLD SOLD SOLD A small, Belgian antique ceramic floor with original triple border tiles dated from the early part of the 20th century. The floor has been reclaimed from the entrance area of a house in Billy-Montigny in Nord Pas de Calais, France, a town some 30 kms from the Belgian border. The surface area of the floor totals 6m2 / 65 sq ft and the tiles bear the inscription ‘CNW’, an abbreviation for ‘Societe Anonyme Le Ceramique National, Welkenraedt’, a company established at Forges-lez-Chimay in 1892 which later opened a subsidiary in Walkenraedt in 1900. The Welkenraedt factory continued to trade until the mid 1920’s. The floor is classically geometrical in design and well suited to a hallway where a visual navigation into the home is welcoming. the pallet is sage green, primrose blue and mustard with white. Both the main field tiles and same size floral themed borders are 14cm square with the large borders framed by a double half size border, again in a palette of green and white on a mid grey fond.
The tiles have all been professionally cleaned of their old lime based mortar and have had old wax and dirt removed with a high pressure steam clean. They reveal a rich patina indicative of their age, small chips and nibbles are present, some surface wear apparent on a small number of tiles but their condition is good, the ceramic of quality and the slip deep and consistent. Being ceramic, and highly fired, they are suitable for internal or external use and can be use with an under-floor heating system.
