Mosaic styled French floor tiles c.1915 (CE32)

Mosaic styled French floor tiles c.1915

SOLD SOLD SOLD

9.5m2 / 100 sq ft of antique ceramic floor tiles dating from c.1915, complete with original same size and half size border tiles. The floor was reclaimed from the hallway of a village house close to Troyes, in the Champagne region of France. The reverse of the tiles are marked ‘H’ and they are 14cm sq / 5 ½ inches sq. The principal field tiles have a mosaic surface theme on an off-white background and produce a classical tessellation of a beautifully designed ornate cross motif in a sea green with burnt red and warm mustard present in the centre of the motif. The mosaic themed border tiles again feature fluid lines and curves in burnt red and sea green but on a mauve background. This is a striking floor, classical in its form yet with the best of French expression and indulgence in the design. The tiles have been cleaned of their old mortar and have had their faces steam cleaned as they were originally very soiled. They are in very good condition and are ready to relay and being ceramic they are suitable for under-floor heating systems and can be laid both indoor and outdoors.
