10.75m2 Antique French ceramic encaustic floor - cream on grey (CD7)
SOLD SOLD SOLD An 10.75m2 / 115 sq ft antique French ceramic encaustic floor reclaimed from the hallway of a village house in Juvigny in the Marne area of northern France and now restored to its original beauty.
The 15cm square tiles bear a fluid, ornate circular motif in cream on a slip of mid grey* with the same size borders exquisitely framing the floor, laying in two's, back to back. The design is without doubt indulgent but the monochrome palette adds simplicity and purity and the tessellation of the design as it opens out is subtle and a great endorsement of how often 'less is more'. The floor has cleaned very well, the ceramic is of good quality and aside occasional chips and edge nibbles expected of a period floor of this age it can be laid with confidence for the next 100 years.
Being ceramic encaustic and highly fired, the floor can be laid either inside or outside of the home, for example an entrance garden path, on a patio etc. They are also excellent conductors and retainers of heat and can be used with underfloor heating systems.
