+/- 12.5m2 Handmade antique Douvrin ceramic encaustic floor – 1905 (CE140)
A beautiful, handmade, French antique ceramic encaustic floor manufactured by Compagnie Generale de Construction de Fours Ceramiques, Ceramiques de Douvrin. The field tiles can be seen in the Douvrin catalogue of 1905, a scan of which is below, and in the case of this floors layout both individual tiles have been interlocked. The floor is framed by a floral themed border tile of the same palette, also 14.2 cm sq in size.
Reclaimed from the kitchen of a house in Orleans and comprehensively and thoroughly restored this is a floor full of character. In good condition and with a lovely patina there are small groutable chips and nibbles apparent on some tiles but the high resolution photographs below of a section of the floor are representative of the whole and the ceramic of the 1.5cm thick tiles is excellent. Being originally handmade in batches the reds vary in tone, adding to the charm and individuality of the floor, and the sky blue fond of the second tile is warm and bright. This is a floor demanding to be the hero in a room, whether it is a kitchen or small conservatory, unmistakably French and a guaranteed talking piece!
