19m2+ Thistle themed ceramic encaustic tiles with double borders (CE139)
A large and complete, 19m2 / 200 sq ft +, antique French ceramic encaustic floor complete with its original same size and a half size border tile series.
The vegetal theme of the tiles, a theme consistently found during the art nouveau period, centres on French 'chardons' or thistles. The floor dates from the early part of the 20th century and has been reclaimed from the entrance area of a town house close to Bethune in the Picardy area of north France. The floor is in good condition and has cleaned very well, revealing a good quality ceramic, deep slip and colours that are consistent and vibrant. Being on a white fond the floor is well suited to distribute light and would work well in an entrance hall or conservatory, linking house and garden. Being ceramic encaustic and highly fired, they can be used with underfloor heating systems and can be laid internally or externally as frost or ice will not damage the tiles.
