2.45m2+ to 3.6m2 - Handmade Paray Le Monial French floor tiles c.1900

SOLD   SOLD   SOLD   c.2.45m2 to 3.6m2 of antique ceramic encaustic floor tiles made by Paul Charnoz, Paray Le Monial, France c.1900 with +/- same size Boch Freres border tiles. The palette is warm, the design rich and the colours vibrant. The floor has been recovered from the hallway of a town house in Macon, Saone et Loire, Burgundy and has had old mortar removed from the reverse and sides of the tiles as well as old wax and dirt cleaned from the faces of the tiles. It is therefore ready to relay and being ceramic can be laid internally or externally. Its size lends iteself to provide a stunning period feature in a small bathroom, toilet or as a central carpet style feature in a larger room. It can of course be used as a large splashback behind a sink or bath or within an Aga recess in a kitchen.

Along with Boch Freres, Boulenger, Sand & Cie and Maufroid Freres et Souer, Paul Charnoz were amongst the finer producers of period tiles in France, as the exquisite design and detail testifies.

The floor condition is good with the tiles displaying a lovely patina. Some tiles display occassional nibbles and capillary cracks but tiles with larger chips have been rejected and are supplied free for offcuts or laying and grouting in, depending on your choice. There are 1.25m2 of good tiles and 1.25m2 of free reject tiles which can either be laid with their defaults and grouted in, if a rich patina floor is desired, or used for halves. Additional to the main field tile is a Boch Freres mushroom-grey border with lattice designed edge, for which there are another 38 tiles - 1.2m2 with more available should they be required.

We would be happy to assist with evaluating the best fit for your chosen floor or wall area.
