10.5m2 / 110sq ft French ceramic Hallway floor (CD2)
A 10.5m2 / 110sq ft antique French ceramic encaustic tile floor complete with the two original border tiles. The floor has been recovered from the Entrance Hallway of a Town House in Bethune, Nord, dated 1910.
The principal tiles are 15.2cm sq / 6 inches sq, with one same size border tile and a half size complimentary tile. The principal field tiles have a cream base and are anchored by a French cross motif in a warm blue with black piping, yellow and burgundy present. Their design also creates the visual impression at the corners of small ‘cabochons’ (tile inserts), which was a popular during this period. The more ornate large border tiles display a complementary pallette with a sea green also evident.
The floor is in good condition, a small number of tiles display the occasional small chip expected of a floor close to 100 yrs of age but following a professional cleaning the colours have returned beautifully .
