18.25m2 art nouveau French ceramic encaustic floor - early 20th century

An impressively detailed 18.25m2+ / 195 sq ft, French ceramic encaustic floor dating from the beginning of the 20th century, reclaimed from the reception room of a period house in Rouvroy, a town of some 9,000 inhabitants to the south-east of the city of Lens in the Pas de Calais region of northern France. The floor, of 15cm square tiles, embraces the very best of art nouveau styling; a strong floral theme and geometry framed beautifully by a lattice same size border and a half size border tile.

The floor, with 400 main field tiles and close to 500 border tiles has been individually quality controlled and painstakingly cleaned of old mortar and wax to arrive at their now 'ready to relay' state. All four large corner pieces and eight small corner pieces for the borders series are present. The floor is in excellent condition; some tiles display small groutable chips and nibbles but the ceramic and slip depth are very good and beyond a regular washing the floor with require nothing more to retain its beauty and lustre for many years to come. The photographs show a random section of around 2m2 of the total floor.

Being a ceramic encaustic tile, the floor can be laid inside or outside of the home and will of course work very efficiently with underfloor heating systems.
