Stunning 10m2 to 12m2 antique French Sand & Cie ceramic
A stunning antique ceramic with its original left side and right side border tiles, complete with all four corners.
These 15cm square ceramics were produced in the early part of the twentieth century by Manufacture de Carrelages Mosaiques, Sand & Cie, Feignies and we include in the gallery a photograph of both the original factory and the presentation of the tiles in their period catalogue*.
The floor has cleaned superbly as the high resolution photographs of a random sample of 1.5m2 of the floor shows; slip colours are crisp and vibrant on a quality 15mm thick ceramic, the 290 field tiles framed by a border for which there are 80 left side and 80 right side borders plus 4 corners. These borders are laid in duplicate, back to back, as can be seen.
* The antique catalogue spread shows a secondary same size border which we also have available. Should you wish to also take 40 of these border tiles it will increase the floors size to c.12m2 / 129 sq ft. Some photographs of these additional borders are included in the gallery.
A highly fired tile it can be laid inside or outside of the home and will work well with underfloor heating systems.
NOTE
Antique tiles were most commonly made in single or two tile moulds. Before current computer automation methods their moulds were made my hand and the colour slips mixed by eye. Kiln temperatures could also be variable, as could the firing time. The result is that often tiles display subtle size and thickness variations and there can be tonal variations in colours, owing to the slip mixing and/or firing time. All of this makes these handmade tiles unique and adds to their charm. Some floors display their subtle variations in size and tones, some not, but when photographing we always take a random section of the floor so that it is representative of the whole. A tiler should always dry lay a section of the tiles to familiarise himself with them before starting to fix lay.
