A large turn of the century entrance hallway in Cheshire, England

This large antique Belgian ceramic-encaustic floor with its rich shell themed large border tile and domino small borders has been impressively relaid in this large entrance hall in Cheshire, England.

The palette is warm and while the floor is ornate in detail it is also beautifully geometrical in its tessellation, drawing the eye invitingly down the hallway.

The design is complimentary to the houses period fixtures of high skirting boards, ornate door frames and stair ballustrades. It is also a fine example of how a floor does not have to be laid in a highly prescriptive way…..like border tiles only being used to frame a room. Border tiles particularly can be used to highlight specific sections or features in a room to great effect or to assist visually with navigation, as they have been here.
