10m2 / 107 sq ft art nouveau floor with a flowing triple border

One of four floors, recovered from the same early 20th century house in Namur, Belgium we present this now fully restored Belgian ceramic floor totaling 10 m2 / 107 sq. ft. in surface area. This beautifully restored floor is a classic example of Art Nouveau craftsmanship. It was manufactured by Société Anonyme AMAY, Belgique during a period when architecture and decorative arts were moving toward more organic, nature-inspired forms—and this floor reflects that philosophy in every detail. For provenance, we include in the gallery scans from the period Société Anonyme AMAY, Belgique catalogue presenting the tiles.

The layout of the floor includes 14 cm / 5.5 inch square field tiles framed with a same size flowing ribbon themed border. These border tiles bring movement and elegance to the composition, curving gently around the main field in true Art Nouveau style. The layout is completed and complimented by a geometric half-border, introducing soft structure and a touch of green to the overall pastel colour palette, which also includes soft blues, greys, dusty pinks, off-white and a warm chocolate tone.

The floor has been carefully cleaned, with old mortar and years of wax removed to reveal vibrant, consistent colours and a warm patina, commensurate with its design and age. The ceramic is 15 mm / 0.6 inches thick and of high quality, with only a few tiles bearing edge nibbles or small chips that can be grouted in during installation, adding to the floors charm and uniqueness. We have recovered three of the large border corner tiles and five of the half-sized ones; missing pieces can easily be replicated by mitre-cutting the regular border tiles of both series thanks to their symmetrical design.

Suited for both indoor and outdoor spaces, this highly fired ceramic will also work well with underfloor heating systems. It offers not only a durable and practical surface but a timeless design statement—an authentic piece of Art Nouveau heritage, ready for its next chapter.

Tile quantities, give or take one or two:-

FIELD tiles - 355 - 7 m2 /  75 sq. ft

LARGE BORDER tiles - 71 plus 3 corners - 1.5 m2 / 16.2 sq ft or 10.4 linear metres / 34 linear ft.

SMALL BORDER tiles - 145 tiles plus 5 corners - 1.4 m2 / 15 sq ft or 20.6 linear metres / 67.5 linear ft.

NOTE Antique tiles were most commonly made in single or two tile moulds. Before current computer automation methods their moulds were made by hand and the colour slips mixed by eye. Kiln temperatures could also be variable, as could the firing time. The result is that often tiles display subtle size and thickness variations and there can be tonal variations in colours, owing to the slip mixing and/or firing time. All of this makes these handmade tiles unique and adds to their charm. Some floors display their subtle variations in size and tones, some not, but when photographing we always take a random section of the floor so that it is representative of the whole. A tiler should always dry lay a section of the tiles to familiarise himself with them before starting to fix lay.
