16m2 / 172 sq ft antique faux-mosaique ceramic - late 19th century

An impressive 16m² / 172 sq ft  ceramic encaustic floor, crafted in the late 1800s by the Société Anonyme Compagnie Générale de Produits Céramiques, Saint-Ghislain, Belgium—a distinguished manufacturer active during the Belle Époque, known for its intricate tilework and refined decorative artistry.

Included in the gallery are scans from their original period catalogue, offering a glimpse into the design sensibilities of the era. The layout of the floor features 'faux-mosaique' motifs that reflected the ornamental trends of the late 19th century and which later resurged again during the Art Deco wave of the 1920s, echoed by contemporaries such as Boch Frères. The faux-mosaique design created the visual impression that a floor was made up of tens of thousands of small mosaic pieces when, in reality, the ceramics are in fact solid 14cm / 5.5cm sq tiles.

The floors composition consists of a principal field and same size border tile, complemented by half size borders arranged in duplicate to elegantly top-and-tail the large borders; all four large border corners and eight small half-border corners have been carefully recovered.

The floor arrives ready to relay, the tiles having been been slowly cleaned of old mortar, grouts to their sides and decades of wax and dirt. They reveal a richly coloured surface of consistent tones on a 15mm / 0.6 inch ceramic that was highly fired during production. Some tiles display groutable minor edge nibbles and small chips, commensurate with their age, but delivering a charming antique patina that preserves the visual integrity of the floor. Suitable for installation indoors or out and fully compatible with underfloor heating systems, the floor offers not only practical low maintenance utility (a regular wash is all it needs to maintain its beauty) but also historic grandeur—a striking architectural statement that resonates with timeless elegance.

Tile quantities, give or take one or two: -

FIELD tiles – 640 tiles – 12.5m2 / 135 sq ft.

LARGE BORDER tiles – 100 tiles plus 4 corners – 2m2 / 21.5 sq ft. – 14.6 linear metres / 47.8 linear ft.

SMALL BORDER tiles – 170 tiles plus 8 corners – 1.7m2 /  18.4 sq ft. – 24.3 linear metres / 79.7 linear ft.

NOTE Antique tiles were most commonly made in single or two tile moulds. Before current computer automation methods their moulds were made by hand and the colour slips mixed by eye. Kiln temperatures could also be variable, as could the firing time. The result is that often tiles display subtle size and thickness variations and there can be tonal variations in colours, owing to the slip mixing and/or firing time. All of this makes these handmade tiles unique and adds to their charm. Some floors display their subtle variations in size and tones, some not, but when photographing we always take a random section of the floor so that it is representative of the whole. A tiler should always dry lay a section of the tiles to familiarise himself with them before starting to fix lay.
