Large, 22m2, Boch Freres & Villeroy Boch ceramic c.1886

A large and impressive ceramic encaustic floor consisting of a principal field tile, a same size border and a half size border laid in duplicate.

The floor totals 22m2 / 235 sq ft.

Manufactured in the latter part of the 19th century, these impressive ceramics were produced by sister companies; the main floral themed field and half size border tiles by Boch Freres, Maubeuge, France and the lush, fluid same size borders by Villeroy and Boch, Mettlach, Germany. We include a scan from their catalogue of 1886 presenting the border tiles.

These are quality, heritage, handmade ceramics manufactured by a world renowned, award winning ceramicist which is still trading now. 1.4kgs each in weight, 17.2cm sq in size, they have restored beautifully; there are ocassional tiles displaying edge nibbles or small chips, all of which are groutable, and the high resolution photographs in the gallery are of a randomly selected section of the floor and representative of the total 22m2. Some tonal variation in the field tiles is evident, adding to their charm, and the result of human hands controlling slip colour mix, kiln temperature and firing time as opposed to human hands guiding the computerised manufacturing process currently.
