A small Art Nouveau ceramic, ideal as a feature or splashback

A 1.9m2 / 20.5sq ft art nouveau ceramic in a pastel palette, the tiles were handmade in the early part of the 20th century by Societe Anonyme Carreaux Ceramiques de Morialme, Belgique and we include in the photo gallery a scan from the original catalogue presenting the tiles.

In 15 years of trading, we have come across the floor twice and on both occasions the fully restored tiles we supplied were laid to stunning effect in bathrooms in Illinois, USA and Sussex, UK and we have included some photos from both in the photo gallery. This same floor is smaller in surface but again lends itself perfectly as a statement piece; we think again in a bathroom where it could be a central carpet style feature, complimented by a plain modern ceramic, or on a wall as a splashback behind an antique bath and sink or on shower walls.

14.5cm square with half size borders there are 57 field tiles and 58 small border tiles along with their 8 corner tiles. As this is a small surface area it is likely that economical shipping is only possible if the floor is part of a larger order. But we are happy to provide a quote for whatever you require.

Antique tiles were most commonly made in single or two tile moulds. Before current computer automation methods their moulds were made my hand and the colour slips mixed by eye. Kiln temperatures could also be variable, as could the firing time. The result is that often tiles display subtle size and thickness variations and there can be tonal variations in colours, owing to the slip mixing and/or firing time. All of this makes these handmade tiles unique and adds to their charm. Some floors display their subtle variations in size and tones, some not, but when photographing we always take a random section of the floor so that it is representative of the whole. A tiler should always dry lay a section of the tiles to familiarise himself with them before starting to fix lay.
